What can Haart do?
HAART can control viral load, delaying or preventing the onset of symptoms or progression to AIDS, thereby prolonging survival in people infected with HIV. HAART has been in use since 1996 and has changed what was once a fatal diagnosis into a chronically managed disease.

When people started highly effective antiretroviral treatment, they gained weight. This is called a ‘return to health’ effect of treatment and is still seen today in people with very advanced HIV who lost weight before starting treatment.

Although HIV can pass from a woman with HIV to her child during pregnancy, at the time of birth, or when breast-feeding the infant, medical treatment of both the mother and her infant can minimize the chances of that happening.
